At the Deborah Disability Foundation, we believe that disability should never mean disadvantage. For too long, persons with disabilities have been overlooked, underestimated, and excluded from opportunities that every human being deserves. Our mission is simple but powerful: to empower persons with disabilities to live with dignity, independence, and full inclusion in society.
Why We Exist
Kenya, like many parts of the world, still faces challenges in ensuring equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. Barriers in education, healthcare, employment, and social participation prevent thousands from reaching their full potential. These barriers are not caused by disability itself, but by systems, attitudes, and environments that fail to accommodate diversity.
That’s why our Foundation exists — to break these barriers, advocate for change, and create programs that give persons with disabilities the tools, resources, and platforms they need to thrive.
What We Do
Our work spans multiple areas, but the heart of it is empowerment. Through our programs, we:
- Advocate for Inclusion: We engage with policymakers, communities, and institutions to ensure that disability rights are recognized and respected.
- Support Education and Training: We believe education opens doors. That’s why we support learning opportunities and vocational training that prepare persons with disabilities for meaningful employment.
- Promote Economic Empowerment: From small business training to partnerships with employers, we help persons with disabilities access opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.
- Raise Awareness: We use storytelling, social media, and events to challenge stereotypes and showcase the abilities, talents, and resilience of the disability community.
Stories That Inspire
Every day, we meet individuals whose courage inspires us to keep going. We’ve seen students who, once denied access to education, now excel in classrooms because of inclusive teaching. We’ve worked with young people with disabilities who are running small businesses and earning a living for their families. We’ve partnered with advocates whose voices are changing laws and shifting public perception.
These stories remind us that disability is not inability. Given the right support and opportunities, persons with disabilities can achieve extraordinary things.
Our Vision for the Future
We envision a future where accessibility is a norm, not an afterthought. Where workplaces actively seek to hire persons with disabilities. Where schools provide inclusive learning environments. Where policies are shaped with the voices of the disability community at the table.
But we know we cannot achieve this vision alone. It requires collaboration — with families, communities, institutions, policymakers, and supporters like you.
